Always worthy of a juicy bite, the Big Apple -- also known as New York, the City that Never Sleeps -- boasts Broadway shows, exceptional exhibitions and attractions, global cuisine, and unparalleled shopping. In 2005, a record 41 million visitors took a bite, including 6.7 million international arrivals, making NYC the nation’s top destination from overseas. Lodging ranges from chic budget, sophisticated boutique, and value-priced hotels to posh spots, with 18 properties set for construction or revamp. Newer hotels include spas, stylish restaurants, rooftop lounges, and pools with skyline views. The expanded Jacob K. Javits Convention Center has a 1,500-room headquarters hotel.
Lower Manhattan redevelopment embraces the 52-story World Trade Center, the first steel support columns of which were erected in December 2006, and the 1,776-foot Freedom Tower with rooftop restaurant / observation deck, set for a 2010 opening. The WTC Transportation Hub, with phase one opening in 2006, is home to New Jersey PATH trains, connecting 11 subway lines via the Fulton Street Transit Center and linking pedestrians to the World Financial Center and Hudson River ferry terminals via underground concourse. Another Yankee Stadium next to the current site opens for the 2009 baseball season, with a Harlem River esplanade and Bronx Terminal Market upgrades. By 2008, NYC adds nearly 5,000 hotel rooms to its inventory of 70,639, from modest to luxurious.
